What Do Hotel Star Ratings Mean?

Samantha Mckinney

Much like in other parts of the world, accommodation establishments in Australia are classified using the Star Rating system. Under this system, establishments are assigned a number of stars (ranging from half a star to five stars) depending on their condition and the quality of facilities and services available. Star ratings are used to classify the six types of accommodation facilities, namely caravan-holiday parks, serviced apartments, motels, hosted accommodation facilities, self-catering facilities, and hotels. This article provides a break-down of what star ratings for accommodation facilities mean, especially for the benefit of those planning to tour Australia.

Five Star Accommodation Facilities

A five star rating for an accommodation facility serves as recognition that the facility maintains the highest quality standards in all aspects of its operation. Five star facilities are all about luxury and are the most expensive option for temporary accommodation. These facilities are known for the excellent quality of their designs and the great attention to detail displayed in their service provision. Tourists who choose to stay in five star establishments can expect a highly personalised experience throughout their stay.

Four-Star Rated Facilities

For an accommodation facility to receive a four-star rating, it has to provide a deluxe experience for all guests. Four star accommodation is characterised by superior quality in the establishment's design, coupled with service provision that meets and reflects the perceptive needs of individual guests. These establishments are more affordable than their five-star counterparts, but they still fall in the high-end category.

Three Star Accommodation

An accommodation facility is given a three star rating if it's able to provide a wide range of facilities that go beyond an individual's average accommodation needs. Three-star accommodation facilities provide good quality service similar to their physical attributes and design. They are meant for tourists and holiday makers whose budget allows for an average holiday experience.

Two-Star Accommodation Facilities

Owners and operators of accommodation facilities understand that tourists have different financial capabilities. A two star rating is given to facilities that cater to the needs of the price-conscious tourist. The facilities and service provision in these establishments are limited so as to ensure that boarding rates are competitive and affordable. Additional services from these establishments are often available upon request, or at a fee.

One And Half-Star Accommodation Facilities

Establishments given a one-star rating are those that offer budget accommodation facilities and service without compromising on the security of tourists and the cleanliness of rooms. These establishments also offer fee-based facilities and services upon request.

Half star ratings are reserved for establishments in which the condition and quality of guest facilities have been improved modestly.
